4 Tips to Follow During Winter Construction Projects

Winter construction crew

In the construction industry, safety is a top priority. Making sure you have the right equipment and take all the necessary precautions means walking on and off the site with confidence. When winter weather rolls around, new hazards like snow, ice and freezing temps are something to prepare for.

Winter’s Wrath: 4 Safety Tips for Construction Sites

During winter construction, there are additional measures you can take to ensure the safety of yourself and your crew. Prepare for the winter weather by following these tips:

1. Keep tabs on the weather forecasts

The initial step you can take is to monitor the weather. Whether it’s snow, sleet, or sub-zero temperatures, you’ll be able to determine how to proceed while prioritizing safety.

If snow or ice is in the forecast, make sure to clear your jobsite to prevent injuries. Snow may seem harmless, but it can make surfaces slippery. Packed snow can freeze into ice. Be careful when walking on snowy or icy surfaces to avoid slipping.

Make sure to shovel and salt walkways and stairs of winter construction sites. Keep any sloped roof clear of packed snow and icicles that may fall.

3. Suit up in proper winter gear

To stay warm during winter construction, wear dependable, cold weather gear and the right safety equipment. This will help protect you from the cold. Here is some winter weather gear you should use:

  • Hard hat with liners – Hard hats can protect from falling objects like icicles and the liner will help retain heat.
  • Waterproof boots – Waterproof boots and extra socks are important, especially when wearing steel-toe boots that absorb the cold.
  • Waterproof winter jacket – Layers are key when working in cold weather. Wearing a layer of thermal or moisture wicking clothing as well as a waterproof outer layer will keep you dry and warm.
  • Gloves – Wearing gloves will help prevent frostbite, especially when climbing ladders or scaffolding.

4. Provide a warm break room

Freezing temperatures are dangerous because they can cause frostbite and hypothermia. Even the most seasoned crew is still susceptible to the dangers of cold weather. It’s crucial to provide an area for workers to warm up during winter construction. Provide warm drinks and encourage workers to take frequent breaks and change out of wet clothes.

Defend Floors During Winter Construction

Temporary surface protection not only prevents damage to your floors. It can also prevent injuries from falls. During the winter, even interior construction jobs can be dangerous with tracked-in snow, water and mud.

Using temporary stair protection, such as Stair Armor™, or floor protection, like Ram Board®, can help prevent slips and falls. It can also keep your jobsite safe from damage. Pro Sheets® are even thicker, providing maximum liquid holdout, making it an excellent choice for surface that might endure wet, heavy foot traffic.
